Mariah Carey Biography

Mariah's new album was released in early December of 2002 on the Def Jam Label to which she signed after parting ways with Virgin. The first single "Through the rain" gained airplay all of the world and "it's back to her famous ballad style of the early 90s" like many critics and her record company said. Actually she released such a ballad on any of her last albums and I don't get the point why this song should be so special to top the charts, beside the positive message which reminds me a lot of "Hero". It's a nice lyrical uplifting piece of music and it's the first time in many years that she started the promotion for her album with a single that is not uptempo...
2001 was anything else as a "glitter" year for Mariah Carey. Her first movie (this album is the soundtrack for this star vehicle) "Glitter" was a major commercial and artistical fiasco. There was also much speculation about a reputed suicide attempt, several nervous breakdowns and the obvious unsureness of her direction and creativity. The album was not as much burned as the movie, but hardly anyone could warm for the 80s touch of "Glitter". The first single "Loverboy" sold so badly in the beginning like no other Mariah single before. The gold certification was only achieved because her American record company offered it at a special low price.
The quality of the song is indeed lower as her previous leadoff singles like "Fantasy" or "Honey". You will barely find a refrain and the sample of Cameo's "Candy" goes under in a weak mix. But in general this album is not nearly as bad as its reputation. Guest stars include nearly the same bunch of R&B and Hip Hop cracks as on "Rainbow" (Da Brat, Busta Rhymes, Ja Rule or Nate Dogg) trying to give the album a bit of this so called street credibility. To be true nothing on here really sounds like "street". It's a satisfying (although the occasionally filler water it out) big produced "glittering" album thanks to a couple of nice 80s remakes ("I didn't mean to turn you on" works best) and one outstanding ballad "Never too far" which sounds nearly as good as any of her great adult contemporary ballads. Also very worthwhile are her cover versions of "I didn't mean to turn you on" (done by Cherelle and much more successful by Robert Palmer) and "Last night a DJ saved my life". Too bad that the album starts and ends with the first single (the mix in the end includes guest stars Cameo who save nothing). After this release Mariah vanished into thin air for a while to let the rumours cool down. In early 2002 she won the famous Razzie Award for "Worst Actress of the Year".

Like we all know now, the single flopped badly compared to her earlier releases. The album sales in the USA were ok (#3 on the charts) while in the UK they were a disaster (the album did not even make the top 40 as far as I have seen. I hope another more successful single will propel the sales a little bit. A full review is coming in the future.
